i have a 16" electric. It works really well, but every once in a while,,,,,,,,,THAT DAMN CORD IS A PAIN IN THE A$$. The advantage is I'm not yanking on a cord trying to balance on a ladder. Also never run out of gas. If you only plan on using it once in a while, get the electric.

Gas… the cord might get in the way with electric

If you are not experienced at using them, then NEITHER! Chainsaws are inherently dangerous by the nature of how they perform their task. If you were asking which to use to clean up a little storm damage or the cut up previously downed wood for firewood, that would be different. Dropping trees requires a decent knowledge of the physics involved, as well as the physical properties of the specific type of wood being cut. It's not worth the "savings" to buy a saw and then have an accident. If these trees are simple drops, then the cost of the saw may be more than the cost to have them professionally felled.

That being said (Public Safety Announcement… LOL), I would never own nor use an electric chainsaw. They are under-powered for their size and have that annoying issue of needing electricity. As the owner of a tree service, I have owned and used many different chainsaws. My preference for the homeowner user (infrequent) is a small rear-handle (balances better) gas powered saw in the 30-40cc range.
