Those that are real at Universal have had the chain replaced with a flint, so that it will spark when the actor runs it along the ground, but they will look, sound, and smell like a running chainsaw because that's exactly what it is. They are, however, safe. If you accidentally come into contact with one (though the actors are taught not to come into actual contact with you), your limbs will remain attached. Some are real, some are not.
