Do you think I'm ready to watch The Exorcist?

I have heard of this movie for the longest time, and every time someone talks about it, I get intrigued more and more. My theology/comparative religions class discussed this movie briefly when we were studying exorcisms, and my teacher showed us a 2 minute clip from the film. It was only the part where the girl is being flopped madly up and down on the bed and slaps one of the men. I was scared even after that scene, because I truly believe these situations occur. I have watched other horror films such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the Saw trilogy, The Ring, Hills Have Eyes, ect. But the Exorcist sounds different and I've read all kinds of viewer's reviews. I am 18 next Thursday (practically 18).

This movie to me was one of the most horrible movies ever. Horrible because it was so scary. To think that it COULD happen freaked me out. A lot of kids these days would laugh at it because they aren’t grossed out or freaked out or can;t understand the terror the parents are going through. Being involved in your religions class I would say watch it. It is the most evil movie I have ever seen and would never watch it again. One scene really made me want to physically throw up.

For an older movie, it is excellent. I loved it.

You have a choice what you want to put into your mind. I remember seeing the Exorcist when I was younger and it was rather scarey to me. Now, that I am older I choose not to watch movies like it, the Ring, The Hillsy Have Eyes, or anything else that is gruesome or distorts reality. What you put in your mind will shape you, and you cannot get rid of those images. Once they are there your brain files them away. Consider watching things that will lift up your soul, make you feel good, and things that you can take something positve away. If you choose to review the Exorcist (it might be lame compared to what you’ve already watched), then fill your mind up with more positive things so that you can balance yourself out. Again, you have a choice to what you watch.

I think it is actually a pretty good movie. It was made before Hollywood decided to make priests look bad.

  6. ReeRee says:

If you’ve seen all those other movies then the Exorcist will seem tame in comparison. Especially to Saw. That movie was disgusting.

  7. LostKeys30 says:

You should just go watch American Beauty again, cause The Excorcist sucks. even if things like that do happen, they happen in much more entertaining form.

  8. Pinkadot says:

Why invite that kind of spirit around you? Yuck.

  9. Jack says:

i’ve seen it about 167 times, and it keeps getting funnier every time i see it

  10. Indy says:

I wished I had never watched it…..it was the scariest movie ever made in my opinion…..I watched it when it first came out many many years ago….I was affected for a long time. I do not recommend it–too scary, and it will stay with you.

  11. Leviathan says:

You believe in demonic possession? It is probably too scary for you if you believe in that rubbish.

I’d stick with x-men for now.

  12. Lorelei says:

Oh my yes. I was 14 the first time I watch it. I was scared sh*tless!..but I also LOVE horror movies. If you want to watch a really good one watch the Exorcism of Emily Rose instead.

  13. sniper says:

You will always remember the part where she pukes and her head turns all the way around on her neck. Come to think of it, I dated a girl once that looked alot like her.

  14. ◦Delylah♫ says:

Trust me, its completely different than any other horror movie you’ve seen.

    Watch it in the daytime!.

  15. lilith says:

Exorcisms aren’t real, those ppl are just having psychotic episodes.

Why else does it only happen in certain churches?
–My Mom’s Church Doesn’t Have em’

And why do they happen less in America,
    than in other countries?
    Open your eyes.

Jurassic Park made me want to throw up from the tension. I avoid stuff like that. I watched it later a couple more times, just to get used to the random violence (Does a T-Rex really eat someone right after having eaten an entire goat?) Stupid Michael Crichton. The book was much better. The freaky thing about movies based on true stories is that you know they are based on true stories. Like the Amityville Horror. If you saw Saw though, you are much braver than me.

  17. pusherhombre says:

Remember, this is based on a true story, and the subject matter is real.

The Hills Have Eyes, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and Saw are pure fiction and, for the most part do not address the supernatural.

There were also a lot of production difficulties and quite a story of what happened to the actors and producers during the making of this movie and afterwards.

The Supernatural is never to be trivialized like it has been on the big screen. There are things out there you cannot see with your own eyes and they are very real. . . Whether you believe in them or not.

  18. batgirl2good says:

If you can make it through that horribly depressing movie "American Beauty," you can make it through anything.

"American Beauty" was one of the worst movies I ever saw.

Having said that "The Exorcist" was truly frightening. I went to see it when it first came out but have not seen it since. It’s not the kind of movie I want to see twice.

  19. SuperAtheist says:

"I truly believe these situations occur". If you can make that statement, you should stick with Harry Potter.

  20. Linz says:

It is pretty good. But if you watched those over movies, you can handle this one.

  21. johnandeileen2000 says:

If any who saw this ridiculous movie believed that they were watching something that could happen in real life they are beyond help. Go see it and decide for yourself.

  22. sephoramoon says:

It’s actually VERY tame in comparison to the slasher films of the 1970′s (Texas Chainsaw being one of many) and other films like the Nightmare on Elmstreet series. You also mentioned the Saw series which is SO gross and disturbing by comparision!

If you’ve seen other horror movies, you’ll likely roll your eyes and wonder what the big deal was with the Exorcist. There’s really only one or two good scenes, the rest sucks. Don’t waste your time watching the Exorcist 2 either….it was just awful! The 3rd Exorcist movie was better strangely enough. The newer one (it’s a prequel) that came out a few years ago sucked bigtime! I’m glad I got free tickets for than one!

Lol…anyways enjoy the movie, like I said it’s very tame. The demon part is spooky but nothing for someone who’s watched the movies you described above…no sweat ;)

By the way, the events from that movie were based on a book about a boy instead of a girl that was supposed to be possessed. Well, this story has come under some serious fire lately. It’s basically been debunked as merely a story faked by a church member. It was a story that was blown even more out of proportion by the Author and the movie producers/director.

Just take it as fiction, and enjoy whatever little parts that you can. It’s only a movie.

  23. M says:

It all depends on your state of mind? The film can either be disturbing and haunting or hilariously campy? Regardless, it’s a fun film classic for the genre, IMO. The soundtrack, staging, script, direction, cinematography and atmospherics are haunting. Good Halloween flick double-featured with the original ‘Halloween’.

  24. sugaraddict325 says:

  26. sugar bear says:
