That's good for a start. If it requires an oil/gas mixture and you tried to run it on straight gas, you may have damaged the engine. Also, check that the switch is in the on position. Not that you haven't tried that, but it could be a loose connection as far as this is concerned. Switch on, choke on, pull! Last option: Gasoline, pour, stand back, match, light, toss, enjoy. Also, check that the switch is in the on position. Not that you haven’t tried that, but it could be a loose connection as far as this is concerned.

if so you might not have it adjusted right

Check to see if you have a diaphragm in the carb. If it has one and it leaks for some reason then it will not start. Good way to find out is to but little gas in carburetor intake and try to start if it trys then it is in the carburetor. I would add one more thing to what you have so far. If not you didn't finish the job. If it has spark and compression the issue is most likely the carburetor. The diaphragms go bad.
