how to find how many drive links on a chainsaw chain?

it says 37 on the side i believe what does this mean Also on all of the chainsaw chain packages it says s 40 and other stuff what does this mean what size do i need for my ten inch chain saw please help me

    The s number has to do with the sprocket size, it has nothing to do with the chain length. You can get chains in various lengths for a given sprocket size. If you purchase a different size bar, you would need to purchase the appropriate length chain for that bar, but it would need the same s number because of your sprocket.

    If you have a 10 inch chain saw, then you will buy a 10 inch chain.
    Usually, the pack the chain is in will tell you the size.

    You need to know three things to replace a chain.

    1. Pitch, the distance between three consecutive rivets divided by 2.

    2. Gauge, thickness of drive link.

    3. Length, number of drive links. (drive links are those hooked shaped fingers on the underside of the chain.

    You can always go to a small engine repair shop that has chain and they will make you up one to fit your saw. It is usually cheaper than buying a premade chain. One of the issues you run into is as an example, oregon chain, the packaged chain is made for an oregon bar. A 10" oregon bar may take more drive links than your bar.
