*** Husqvarna 455 Rancher or Stihl MS290 Farm Boss ***?
I need some help deciding on which saw is the best. I have never owned a chainsaw before, but am planning on getting one soon. I live on 6 acres, and will be cutting firewood often, and felling some large trees up to 2 feet in diameter. Which saw will be my best choice for mid range use. The Stihl is about cheaper, but i have always been a Husqvarna fan. Which one should i get? Thanks!!

I like both saws, but go to partstree.com type in Husqvarna 455 Rancher and you get a parts list for the saw and you can buy from many dealers on the internet. Then try Stihl MS290 and you will not find anything for Stihl. Then go to many other sites on internet and you will find that Stihl parts are almost impossible to get on internet. You will find that Stihl parts are extremely costly.

I have spent a lot of time cutting with both brands of saws. I personally like the Farm Boss. I feel that it has more power than the Husky. However the husky is a lighter saw making it much easier on the arms for a long day of use. I have also been told that the newer Farm Bosses don’t cut as well as the older ones did. I say that if you have one that you instinctively like better go with that. I truly believe that they are equal in quality. Either one, I don’t think that you can go wrong.
Hi Rob,
You sir, are a breath of fresh air!!! You’ve done your homework, and it shows.
Both saws are outstanding. I pity the fool that swings a saw more hours than I do. I not only heat with wood, but do a lot of cutting for my customers as well. While I chose the Stihl 290 (formerly called the 029), I have to confess that it’s the third 290 I’ve owned, and I like the local dealer. I just picked up my newest 290 today! Sweet, ‘eh?
Husky’s are great saws also, and a LOT of my buddies are swingin’ ‘em. Both Stihl and Husky’s have almost no down-time, and that’s saying a lot, because our saws really get worked fairly hard at least 3 days a week.
The reason (as previously mentioned) that it’s hard to find replacement parts on line is because Stihl protects it’s dealers parts departments (and thereby the dealerships themselves) from on-line bottom-liners, and I respect that VERY MUCH. Truth be told, I’d rather support my local dealership close to home than someone based in who-knows-where!!!
Work safe buddy !
husky all the way. I cut firewood almost year round just to keep up with demand. I run a rancher 455 with a 20 inch bar and it is a mean saw for the money. My dad is a logger and all his crew runs are huskys and never have a problem. But that could be because they take really good care of them.
be safe and keep on cutting
