Mac 3516 chainsaw. clutch wont slip. took off, cleaned,Put back, works if nut is loose, binds if tightened WHY?
This is an older Mac3516 chainsaw. Purchased at a yardsale for 15 Dollars So whatever happens, cant go wrong. Saw started right up but chain wouldnt slip at slow speed. Stopped saw and pulled on chain. would not slip at all.would turn over motor when pulled. Took off and cleaned clutch assembly, checked sproket. It was ok. Cleaned clutch assembly and put back on saw. Got an exploded parts page for this saw to make sure parts were going back on correct and to insure none were missing. As long as I dont tighten down nut the clutch works ,by hand, like it should but the minute I tighten the nut, the whole thing becomes unmovable. Clutch wont slip. Chain cuts like a direct drive saw. According to parts blowup, everything is there, What am I doing wrong??

I’m sorry but i don’t know the answer, I do know that if it was me I would tighten the bolt for safety’s sake and use it like a direct drive, it will still get the job done.
