New motor oil contains some rather nasty additives and is mildly carcinogenic. Used motor oil is worse, since it contains all the gunk from the engine and the pollutants from incomplete combustion of the fuel, etc.
It depends what you are sawing, but you wouldn’t want to get motor oil on trees etc when pruning them, or burn wood contaminated with motor oil on an open fire.
I know some professional tree surgeons who use cooking oil (the stuff meant for commercial-scale deep frying, bought in "industrial" sized packs, not over-priced little bottles from a delicatessen) for all their chainsaws, since it’s cheaper than "branded" chainsaw oil, works just as well, and doesn’t harm the environment.
I have used my USED motor oil from my car in my chainsaw for 25 years and have had no ill effect. The dirtiness in used oil is nothing compared to the dirtiness the saw experiences in cutting wood. Save your money, never buy bar oil, I see nothing special about it. The chainsaw pumps that oil out so fast that it is continuously cleansing itself. It doesn’t use the same oil over and over. So just put anything in there as long as there isn’t clumps of dirt. I just strain my used oil thru a old t -shirt and have had no problems. I saw 5 cords of wood a winter or more
Yes, chainsaw oil is for lubrication of a different grade. Even motor oil comes in different weights and grades, not using the recommended lubricant could result in excessive friction and wear and tear, I would strongly suggest not putting motor oil into a electric chainsaw.
Chainsaw oil is a thick NO. 80 SAE grade,non-detergent type oil.
Motor oil is thin No.10-30 SAE grade oil contain detergent.
You may use motor oil on chainsaw but the oil shall be leaked out or spend to fast or even smoke while cutting.
