I want to say Ed Gein, but I may be thinking of another movie. Either way, it's LOOSELY based on a real life event (though I've sure the real person (people) were pretty sick as well.

Wow, the link the poster before me has a lot of info. I guess that's why I thought Ed Gein was the basis of another movie (Silence of the Lambs). I've seen a movie based on the actual life of Gein. I just don't remember the name of it.

Ed gein and his exploits. He made masks, furniture, bowls and plates etc. from the corpses of recently deceased women. He also kept a box of noses under his bed. Look him up on google or wiki

The director claims that its based on true events but its really based on the killings of Ed Gein, who killed his victims in a similar fashion in the texas chainsaw but without a chainsaw. He was convicted of only 2 murders but, after his home was explored, they found the remains of over 200 bodies that were either decomposing under his house, made into clothing or had their skeletons used as decorations.

So yeah, loosly based on real events

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was based loosely on the murders committed by 1950s Wisconsin serial killer Ed Gein.

It was based on Ed Gein, because he took the skin of his victims (even though I think he was only convicted of one actual murder) and wore it (and put it on other household objects). Chainsaw part? That was fiction, along with the rest of the story.
