Why does my chainsaw keep cutting to the right?…I've tried sharpening the chain several times.?

Why does my chainsaw keep cutting to the right? With a brand new chain, it starts out cutting straight, but after several cuts, it starts cutting to the right, leaving me with half moon cuts.

Is it possible that the guide(the thing around which the blade moves) is overheating and warping a bit?

The bar is possibly bent. Try replacing the bar with a new one.If it still cuts too much to the right, pay close attention to the arms and see whether one arm is pulling more than the other.

i sway at the bar being bent.

Most of the time it means your chain is sharper on the right side than the left.I suggest getting a file guide and sharpening it with it.I would also check the bar good and make sure its not bent.It could be a little twisted and do this. You may want to replace it as well.

It can be difficult to keep both sides sharpened evenly. Most right handed people tend to file the teeth on the left side a little deeper-a matter of leverage-leaving the teeth on the right side of the chain longer. This causes the chain to take bigger bites with the right teeth and it will cut in that direction. If this was a long going problem with the old chain, the bar can wear on that same side and a new chain will still tilt and cut in that direction. Try turning the bar over (something that should be done occasionally, anyway) and see if that helps. If the bar is worn unevenly, most saw shops have bar rail grinders and gap adjusters that can get you more life out of it.

When the chain is new/sharp you don’t need to put pressure on it to keep it cutting but as it becomes less sharp there is a tendency to force it down into the timber and this causes the bar to twist to one side slightly especially if the groove in the bar is worn and if you are right handed and push down with your left then the chain will drift to the right as it cuts, this drift from straight causes the blade to stick so you force it more thus making the problem worse.

when mine wouldnt cut straight with a new chain, it needed a new bar…cuts fine now…
